A guide to meditation

We’re all familiar with the importance of exercise when it comes to our physical health, but what about our mental and emotional health? Just like we need to move our bodies to stay healthy, we also need to move our minds.

Meditation is a great way to do just that. Though it may seem daunting at first, meditation is a simple and effective way to improve your overall well-being.

As part of our recent focus on looking at complimentary training methods, we’ll discuss what meditation is, the benefits of meditating, and how you can get started. So put on your yoga pants and let’s get going!

The link between mental health and physical performance

It’s no secret that our mental health impacts our physical health. When we’re stressed, our bodies go into fight-or-flight mode, which can lead to a host of physical problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, and even weight gain.

Conversely, when we’re happy and relaxed, our bodies function better. We have more energy and are less likely to get sick.

So it stands to reason that if we want to improve our physical health, we need to start with our mental health. And one of the best ways to do that is through meditation.

What is meditation?

Meditation is an ancient practice that has been used for centuries to promote mental and emotional well-being. The goal of meditation is to focus and quiet the mind, while also promoting relaxation.

Meditation has been used for a variety of purposes, including reducing stress, anxiety, and depression; improving sleep; and even increasing pain tolerance.

There are many different types of meditation, but the most common form is mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation is a type of mindfulness practice that involves focusing on your breath and being aware of your thoughts and sensations without judgment.

Benefits of meditation

There are countless benefits of meditation, both for our mental and physical health. Meditation has been shown to improve our mood, decrease anxiety and stress, and boost our immune system.

It can also help improve our focus and concentration, and increase our creativity and self-awareness.

In addition, meditation has been shown to reduce pain, lower blood pressure, and even slow the aging process.

How to get started with meditation

If you’re new to meditation, there are a few things you should know before getting started. First, it’s important to find a comfortable place to sit or lie down. You may want to try sitting in a chair with your feet flat on the ground or lying down on your back with your legs extended.

Close your eyes and focus on your breath. Start by taking a few deep breaths, inhaling through your nose, and exhaling through your mouth. Then, focus on the sensation of your breath moving in and out of your body.

Start with just a few minutes of meditation each day and work up to longer sessions as you become more comfortable with the practice.

What to do if your mind starts to wander during meditation

If your mind starts to wander during meditation, there are a few things you can do to bring your focus back to your breath.

First, try to focus on the sensation of your breath moving in and out of your body.

Something else you can try is focusing on a mantra or an object in front of you. If your mind continues to wander, simply return your focus to your breath and start again. Remember, the goal of meditation is not to clear your mind completely but to focus and quiet it.

Lastly, don’t be too hard on yourself if your mind does wander. It’s normal for thoughts to pop into your head during meditation, and the more you practice, the easier it will be to focus.

The bottom line

Meditation is a great way to improve your mental and physical health. If you’re new to meditation, start with just a few minutes each day and work up to longer sessions as you become more comfortable with the practice.
