The Garmin Noosa Triathlon is one of Australia’s most anticipated sporting events spanning over 40 years. Ranked one of the top 10 world triathlons, the Garmin Noosa Tri takes place over one fantastic week in Noosa, covering the beach, town centre, and hinterland. This guide covers everything you need to know, from when Noosa triathlon dates to an 8-week training plan.

When Is the Noosa Triathlon in 2024? 

The 2024 Noosa Triathlon takes place from 30 October to 3 November 2024. There are 10 events spread across five days, offering participants the opportunity to find the perfect events for their skills and fitness level. 

The official triathlon kicks off at 6:15 AM on Sunday 3 November 2024. Participants will complete a 1.5km swim, 40km bike ride, and 10km run to the finish line. Check-in takes place Friday 1 November from 10 AM to 7 PM and Saturday 2 November from 10 AM to 4 PM. 

Where Exactly Is the Noosa Triathlon?

The event takes place in Noosa, a city along the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. There’s a swim through the Noosa Main Beach, a bike leg through gorgeous hinterland roads, and a run along scenic Noosa Heads.

Noosa Triathlon Age Groups 

There are 14 age groups eligible for awards:

  • 15-19 
  • 20-24
  • 25-29
  • 30-34
  • 35-39
  • 40-44
  • 50-54
  • 55-59
  • 60-64
  • 65-69
  • 70-74
  • 75-79
  • 80+

Additionally, the Athenas (females weighing 70kg+)  and Clydesdales (male weighing 90-99kg & 100kg+) can participate for awards as well..

There will be 10 cash prizes in each age group ranging from $620 to $15,600 AUD. 

How to Sign Up for the Noosa Triathlon

Open participants must supply their best three race results within the last 18 months. Female applicants must have completed their races in under 2 hours and 18 minutes, while male applicants have a benchmark of less than 2 hours and 5 minutes. 

Events Overview

While the triathlon is the main event, there are nine other events that take place over the course of the Noosa Triathlon week. Many are open for all skill levels and even include options for children and families to participate.

Run Swim Run

Kids and teens often compete for the title of The Schools Aquathlon Challenge Champion in this action-driven event. Adults are also welcome to participate in Run Swim Run

Date: Wednesday 30 October 2024 

Time: 5:30AM – 6:30 AM

Ages: 8+

Distance: 500m run / 200m swim / 500 run for ages 8-13; 1.5km run / 750m swim / 1.5km run for ages 14+. 

Tour De Noosa

Tour De Noosa is a laid-back bike ride along the Noosa Tri bike course. Enjoy chatting with your mates and soaking up the sun with your free coffee from First Batch at the Woods. 

Date: Friday 1 November 2024 

Time: Starts at 6:00 AM

Ages: 14+ 

Distance: 28km 

Breakfast Fun Run

The Breakfast Fun Run helps raise awareness for the McGrath Foundation, a breast cancer support and education charity. Wear your best pink get-up and walk, run, or dance your way down Noosa Beach and the Boardwalk.

Date: Friday 1 November 2024 

Time: Starts at 7:35 AM 

Ages: All ages allowed, but all participants, including infants and children, must be registered. Children 12 and older can participate without an accompanying adult. 

Distance: 5km 

Ocean Swim

What’s better than a swim in the ocean? Embrace the natural beauty at Noosa Beach with a refreshing and invigorating swim through the famous Noosa 1000 Ocean Swim, which celebrates its 24th year in 2024.

Date: Friday 1 November 2024 

Time: Starts at 4:15 PM

Ages: Children 10+ – adult; participants booked into age groups ranging from Under 30 to 70+. 

Distance: 1000m

Superkidz

Get the little ones out and active in the Noosa SuperKidz event! Let your budding athlete tackle exciting challenges and take home a singlet and finishers medal, gifted to them by one of the famous Noosa Tri sporting celebrities! 

Date: Saturday 2 November 2024 

Time: Starts at 7:30 AM

Ages: 7-13 

Distance: 100m swim / 3km cycle / 500m run for ages 7-10; 200m swim / 5km cycle / 900m run for ages 11-13. 

Special Tri 

The accessible, inclusive Tingirana Noosa Special Triathlon invites children and adults with special needs to experience the thrill, fulfillment, and sense of pride that comes with completing a triathlon. 

Date: Saturday 2 November 2024 

Time: Approximately 8:15 AM 

Ages: 7+  

Distance: 100m swim / 3km cycle / 500m run 

Super Saturday

Some of Australia’s most prolific athletes (and a few celebrities) come to battle it out on Super Saturday across four exhilarating events. Come watch professional cyclists power along the famous Noosa Parade and feel the excitement of the crowd as they cheer on the contestants. 

Date: Saturday 2 November 2024 

Time: Starts at 2:30 PM

Requirements: Participants must hold an A grade Licence, NRS Team or UCI Licence.

Distance: 30 minutes and three laps around Noosa Parade 

How to Train for the Noosa Triathlon: An 8-Week Program 

Taking on a triathlon is a huge achievement, and the best way to gear up for success is to start training at least two months before the event. You may need longer depending on your fitness level and comfort with running, cycling, and swimming. 

As a general recommendation, here is an 8-week guide for athletes to start prepping for the Noosa Tri:

Weeks 1 & 2 

  • Monday: 1km swim focusing on technique and proper form and breathing 
  • Tuesday: 30 km of light biking 
  • Wednesday: 5 km run at an easy pace 
  • Thursday: Rest 
  • Friday: 1.5 km swim with interval training 
  • Saturday: 20 km bike ride 
  • Sunday: 3km run or rest 

Weeks 3 and 4

  • Monday: 1.5km swim with interval training and focus on speed 
  • Tuesday: 40km bike ride with hill intervals
  • Wednesday: 7 km interval run 
  • Thursday: Rest 
  • Friday: 2km swim focused on endurance 
  • Saturday: 10km run at a steady pace 
  • Sunday: 5km bike ride or rest 

Weeks 5 and 6

  • Monday: 2km swim with focus on speed and tempo sets
  • Tuesday: 45-50km bike ride with tempo sets
  • Wednesday:10km run with tempo sets and intervals
  • Thursday: Rest
  • Friday: 2.5km swim with long intervals 
  • Saturday: 10-12km run at steady pace 
  • Sunday: 40-50km bike ride with hill intervals 

Weeks 7 

  • Monday: Rest
  • Tuesday: 1.5km easy swim
  • Wednesday: 30km bike ride with light intervals 
  • Thursday: 7km run at an easy pace  
  • Friday:  1km relaxed swim 
  • Saturday: Rest
  • Sunday:  20km bike ride and a 4km run
