Group A is the smallest group and the one doing the most work for genuine performance benefit. It includes ingredients most endurance athletes already reach for, electrolytes and caffeine, plus two that get less airtime outside strength sport: creatine and beta-alanine. Group D is the one to actively avoid, not because every ingredient in it is illegal to buy, but because the risk of an undeclared banned substance is highest in that tier.
What the Evidence Actually Shows

Electrolytes and hydration
Sodium and other electrolytes sit in AIS Group A because the evidence for hydration and performance is well established, not because of any single blockbuster study. Creatine and beta-alanine
Creatine has the strongest evidence base of any performance supplement outside caffeine. Numerous clinical trials show a consistent benefit for high-intensity, intermittent effort, and it can increase strength, power and work output from maximal muscle contractions. That matters for endurance athletes too: interval sessions, hill repeats and finishing kicks are all high-intensity, intermittent efforts layered inside an endurance training block, so the benefit reaches well beyond strength sport.
Beta-alanine’s evidence is more mixed. Numerous trials show inconsistent results, with the clearest signal in short, high-intensity efforts and little benefit once an activity runs past about 10 minutes. For an endurance athlete, that means beta-alanine is more relevant to a track session than a marathon.
