Eddie Keogh: Fuelled by FIXX, heading to UTMB OCC

From Australia to the French Alps, Eddie Keough is taking on one of trail running’s biggest challenges the 61km CCC at UTMB.

A long-time FIXX athlete and dedicated trail runner, Eddie has built his race-day fuelling strategy around FIXX products and plenty of experience. We caught up with him before he heads to Europe to find out why he keeps coming back to FIXX, exactly how he plans to fuel his UTMB race, and what he’s most excited about when he hits the trails in Chamonix.

You’ve fuelled with FIXX for a while now. What keeps you coming back?

“I like that FIXX is a local brand and everything is made here in Burleigh Heads, Australia. The flavours are great, and since I’ve been fuelling properly with FIXX, I haven’t had another stress fracture, which I’ve struggled with in the past.”

What’s your FIXX fuelling strategy for UTMB?

For Eddie, fuelling starts well before race day. The day before, he’ll sip on around 500ml of Fuel X Pro and have a Gel X Pro to start preparing his gut for the high carbohydrate intake ahead.

Race morning is simple: toast with peanut butter, Vegemite and honey, plus a black coffee or a convenient FIXX ColdBrew Espresso Shot.

On the way to the start, he’ll sip 250ml of caffeinated Wild Berry Fuel X, take a Gel X Pro around 15 minutes before the race, then another caffeine-free gel just before the gun goes.

His goal during the race is 90–100g of carbohydrate per hour.

His hydration vest starts with two 500ml soft flasks: one with two scoops of caffeinated Fuel X and the other with a diluted scoop of caffeine-free Fuel X. He then supplements this with two gels per hour, timing them around the course often using downhill sections where it’s easier to eat.

He carries extra flasks pre-loaded with powder, ready to grab water at aid stations, helping him get through quickly without wasting time.

And around the 30km mark? CrampFix. Eddie takes a good squirt straight into his mouth, describing it as a great palate cleanser as well as part of his strategy for managing cramps.

He’ll use Gel X Pro throughout the race, along with a couple of other gels for some flavour and texture variety.

What are you most looking forward to or nervous about at UTMB?

“I'm definitely more excited than nervous. Hopefully the views will take the edge off the pain!”

The race itself doesn't worry Eddie too much. He's more concerned about getting to the start line after the long trip from Australia, avoiding getting sick on the plane and managing the jet lag.

And, perhaps most importantly…

“I’m more nervous about driving on the Autobahn in Switzerland than the actual race!” 😄

He's heading into the 61km OCC at UTMB with a clear plan, plenty of experience and a whole lot of excitement.

Good luck, Eddie! We’ll be following every kilometre. 🇦🇺🏔️
