From Practice to Podium: How fisiocrem Became One of Australia’s Leading Pain Relief Brands

A Conversation with fisiocrem Co-Founder Peter Smith

Whether you are walking into a physiotherapy clinic, lining up at the Gold Coast Marathon, or finishing a local Parkrun, chances are you’ve seen the iconic purple tube of fisiocrem.

Launched in Australia in 2009, fisiocrem has grown to Australia’s #1 topical pain relief brand containing Arnica (Claim based on IQVIA™ Sell Out Service for the Pharmacy Database, Topical Analgesics Category, Segment–Topical Arnica for Pain Relief for the 52 weeks period ending 30/05/2026 for the Australia Grocery and Pharmacy market, Pronat defined product hierarchy).

We sat down with fisiocrem Co-Founder Peter Smith to discuss the brand’s origins, its uncompromising approach to sourcing raw botanical ingredients, and why supporting grassroots athletic communities remains at the heart of the business.

The Origins and the Science of Consistency

Q: Peter, take us back to the beginning. What led to the founding of Fisiocrem, and how did you secure the rights for Australia, New Zealand, and Canada?

Peter Smith: Our journey actually started back in New Zealand, working with various wellness brands. The original creators eventually relocated to Spain and formulated the early version of fisiocrem in 2005.

We recognised the immense potential of a natural recovery product, so in 2009, we acquired the rights for Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Today, 16 years later, fisiocrem is the number one Arnica-based product in the Australian market.

  • Market position: Fisiocrem – Australia’s #1 topical pain relief brand containing Arnica. • Community engagement: Supports 100+ athletic and endurance events annually

Q: The topical pain relief market is crowded. What drove your commitment to a formula made with naturally derived active ingredients?

Peter Smith: It stemmed from a real need in the high-performance athletic world. One of our co-founders was an elite international athlete representing New Zealand across track cycling, mountain biking, and equestrian events at World Championships and Olympic levels. She wanted a topical product made with naturally derived active ingredients and menthol to support her training and recovery.

In the early days, buying herbal oils on the open market was tough because ingredient quality varied wildly. To fix that, we stopped buying third-party processed oils. Today, we buy all our plant materials as dried whole flowers direct from farmers, primarily in European mountainous regions and Australia, as well as our own farm in New Zealand's South Island.

We extract the plant oils through a fully documented, proprietary process. Sourcing our oils from farms with long-standing growers of fisiocrem's active ingredients ensures the concentration and consistency remain reliable batch to batch.

Building fisiocrem's Practitioner Foundation & The Grassroots Surge

Q: Before Fisiocrem became a retail powerhouse in pharmacies nationwide, you built your foundation strictly in the practitioner market. Why was that strategy so vital?

Peter Smith: For our first five years, we operated exclusively in the professional practitioner space, selling directly to physiotherapists, massage therapists, and chiropractors. We built direct relationships with over 4,000 health professionals.

Physiotherapists are naturally fit, active, and highly discerning about what they use in their practice. When a physio uses fisiocrem during a treatment session, patients get to experience the product firsthand. The practitioner doesn't even have to pitch it; patients often go on to seek out the product they'd used in the clinic.

For these reasons, we're long-standing supporters of the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA), because we're big believers in the work they do. Retail and pharmacy distribution followed as consumers sought out the product their physios used.

Q: Fisiocrem seems to be everywhere in the endurance sports scene – from the Gold Coast Marathon to your own signature events. How did that community presence evolve?

Peter Smith: It grew directly out of those physio relationships. Practitioners working with local sports teams started inviting us along to run recovery zones.

Today, we have a dedicated, full-time events manager who coordinates fisiocrem’s presence at over 100 events across Australia every year. We hold the naming rights to major races like the fisiocrem GC30 at Main Beach and the fisiocrem GC50 in Coolangatta, which hosts the Australian National 50km Championships. At major events like the Gold Coast Marathon, we engage nearly 30 professional physiotherapists and massage therapists to provide free post-race recovery massages to thousands of runners.

Endurance, Nutrition, and Practice What You Preach

Q: You are an active runner yourself, currently preparing for the Sydney Marathon. How does your personal training shape your perspective as a founder?

Peter Smith: I’ve been exercising daily since I was 15. I do 150+ Parkruns, regularly run half marathons, and train four days a week alongside strength work in the gym. Running along the Gold Coast oceanfront in the winter at 20 degrees is hard to beat.

When you're out there putting in the long miles, you understand the exact pain points athletes face, whether it's muscle tightness, joint fatigue, or fuel depletion. It keeps our brand grounded in reality.

Peter Smith's Marathon Training Routine

  • Tuesday: Speed work / Fartlek intervals (10 min WU, 30 min speed efforts, 10 min CD)
  • Thursday: Light tempo run
  • Saturday: Light jog / Parkrun
  • Sunday: Weekly long run
  • Mon / Wed / Fri: Gym strength & mobility conditioning

Q: High-performance recovery isn't just topical – it requires proper internal fueling. How do you approach your race nutrition during heavy training blocks?

Peter Smith: Nutrition is critical when you're logging heavy distance. You need functional fuel that is easy on the stomach and doesn't cause GI distress when your heart rate is elevated.

I rely heavily on specialised endurance fuelling systems like FIXX Nutrition. Whether it’s using their sports drinks during hot training blocks or using an espresso shot gel to get that clean caffeine boost before a long run, having high-quality, gut-friendly nutrition paired with topical muscle recovery is what keeps you moving without hitting the wall.

The Next Era of Fisiocrem

Q: As fisiocrem marks over 16 years in Australia, what is the core philosophy driving the business into its second decade?

Peter Smith: Complete end-to-end control and unwavering loyalty to our community. Because we manage everything in-house, from farm sourcing to formula extraction, event logistics, and direct practitioner support—we can move fast and keep our standards uncompromisingly high.

When you go for a run on the Gold Coast or in Melbourne and see hundreds of runners wearing the fisiocrem purple singlets and hats, it makes you incredibly proud. We started with a simple commitment to help people move comfortably and recover naturally, and that core mission will never change.
